The Biology and Anatomy of the Aging Lower Face and Neck
Over time, natural aging can lead to concerns such as jowls, marionette lines, loose skin, "turkey neck" and loss of definition to the chin and jawline. There are often 3 major factors that play a role in the appearance of aging in the lower face and neck:
Muscle Involvement: As we age, the muscles of the lower face remodel, getting shorter and tighter. This causes a downward pull on the face and can emphasize the appearance of jowling, neck laxity, a down-turned mouth and "orange peel" appearance of the chin. Coupled with loss of fat in the lateral and mid-cheek areas of the face, this pull can exaggerate a "saggy" appearance.
Volume Loss: Age-related changes affect the fat pads in our face, which, along with bone and muscle, create the scaffolding for our skin. With fat and bone loss, we see a lack of structural support and a shifting of the remaining volume to areas of the lower face. This is responsible for jowling, creasing and folds around the chin and mouth, as well as lack of undereye support leading to a tired and aging appearance.
Skin Laxity: Collagen and elastin loss begin as early as our mid-20s, where we start to lose around 1% of our collagen annually. By our 40s, we've lost between 10-20% of our skin's collagen, and women can loose up to 30% of their collagen supply within the first 5 years of hitting menopause, followed by accelerated decline. Elastin loss is equally as significant, since this unique protein is responsible for the "snap back" effect on our skin and creates a tight, lifted look in the jawline and neck. With the loss of these essential proteins, the skin appears crepey, less firm and supple and can present itself as "loose" skin.

What We Can Do About It

Tox Treatments: these treatments help to relax the muscles of the lower face and neck which shorten and pull down as we age. Also known as a "Nefertiti Neck Lift", these injections may be placed to the corners of the mouth, chin, jawline and/or neck bands to alleviate this pull and create a subtle, natural lift.
Volume enhancement: To replace volume loss in the lateral aspects of the face, jawline and chin, and stimulated collagen and elastin, we use a variety of techniques that may include dermal fillers, biofillers such as Radiesse Gold and/or PRP. By filling in the areas of deficit, we create the appearance of a lifted, rejuvenated lower face and a tighter neck.
Tightening treatments: Tightening loose, crepey areas of the lower face and neck takes years off a person's appearance. Using our Scarlet radiofrequency (RF) microneedling device, we perform full face and neck rejuvenation using our EXO|E plant-based exosomes and at-home skin care for amazing results!
