If you wake up with a sore jaw, if your dentist keeps mentioning a night guard, or if you've noticed your face looks wider and more square than it used to — overactive masseter muscles may be the culprit.

Masseter botox is one of the most requested treatments at Damn Girl! Aesthetics and Wellness, and honestly, it's one of our favorites. It sits right at the intersection of feels better and looks better, which is a rare combination in aesthetics. Here's everything you should know before you book.

What Is the Masseter Muscle?

Your masseter is the thick, rectangular muscle that runs along the side of your jaw, connecting your cheekbone to your lower jawbone. Clench your teeth and press your fingers just in front of your ears — that hard bulge you feel pop out? That's it.

It's one of the strongest muscles in the human body relative to its size. And like any muscle, it gets bigger the more you use it. If you clench during the day, grind at night, chew a lot of gum, or carry stress in your face (hello, most of us), that muscle builds up over time. The result is a wider, more square lower face — plus jaw soreness, tension headaches, and worn-down teeth.

How Masseter Botox Works

Masseter botox involves injecting a neuromodulator — Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, or Daxxify — directly into the masseter muscle on each side of the jaw. The product temporarily blocks the nerve signals telling that muscle to contract with so much force.

Two things happen from there:

The tension lets go. Within about one to two weeks, most clients notice their jaw feels more relaxed. Less clenching, less morning soreness, fewer tension headaches. Many people report they stop waking up with a locked, achy jaw.

The muscle slims down. When a muscle isn't working overtime, it gradually reduces in size — the same way a bicep softens when you stop lifting. Over 6 to 12 weeks, that translates to a narrower, more tapered lower face and a more defined jawline angle.

Would I benefit from masseter botox?

We see the best results in clients who fall into one or more of these camps:

  • Chronic clenchers and grinders (bruxism). If you've cracked a molar, worn down enamel, gone through night guards, or been told by your dentist that you may need gum grafting, this treatment addresses the muscle causing the damage.

  • Jaw pain and TMJ-related tension. Not every TMJ issue is muscular, so this isn't a universal fix — but when muscle overactivity is the driver, relief can be significant.

  • Tension headaches. Especially the kind that start at the temples or radiate from the jaw.

  • Anyone wanting a softer, more tapered lower face. A slimmer masseter creates more of a V-taper and can make the cheekbones read higher by contrast.

  • Clients building an overall facial balancing plan. Masseter botox pairs beautifully with chin and jawline filler, biostimulators, and skin tightening.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

The treatment itself is fast — usually 10 to 15 minutes. Your provider will have you clench so she can map exactly where your muscle sits and how strong it is, then place a small number of injections into the safe zone on each side.

Dosing is genuinely individualized. Someone with a heavy grinding habit and a strong, bulky masseter needs meaningfully more product than someone seeking subtle contour refinement. Anyone quoting you a flat "everyone gets X units" number over the phone is guessing.

There's no real downtime. You may have small red dots or slight tenderness for a few hours. You can go straight back to work.

Timeline: Tension relief tends to show up first, around 1 to 2 weeks. Visible slimming builds gradually over 6 to 12 weeks. Results typically last 3 to 6 months — often longer than forehead or crow's feet treatments, because the masseter is a large muscle that takes a while to rebuild.

Aftercare: Stay upright for about 4 hours, skip strenuous exercise for 24 hours, and don't massage or apply pressure to the area that first day.

Injector Skill Matters:

The masseter sits directly next to the muscles that control your smile. Product placed too low or too far forward can migrate into the risorius and produce a temporarily crooked or weakened smile. It resolves on its own — but "it wears off eventually" is not the standard you should accept.

There's also a technique element to getting even results. If one side is dosed heavier than the other, you can end up with visible asymmetry in your lower face.

This is precisely why our providers have advanced facial anatomy training, and the entire philosophy at Damn Girl! is longevity aesthetics — treatments that support how your face ages over years, not quick fixes. That means honest consultations, and sometimes telling someone that masseter botox isn't the right call for their concern.

Common Questions We Get

Will my face look sunken?

No. Done correctly, masseter botox slims the muscle without touching your fat pads or facial volume. It refines the jaw angle — it doesn't hollow you out.

Will I still be able to chew?

Yes. Some clients notice mild chewing fatigue with very tough foods (steak, bagels, hard candy) in the first couple of weeks. It's temporary and typically mild.

Do I have to keep doing it?

Not necessarily — but results are cumulative in a good way. Many clients find they need less product over time, and can stretch out the interval between visits as the muscle stays relaxed.

Is it just cosmetic?

For a lot of our clients, the functional relief is the whole reason they came in. The slimmer jawline is the bonus.
